Letting an app edit your theme is a serious permission. ThemeMedic is built so that you can undo anything it does, and so that the cautious path is also the default one.
The recommended workflow
- Run a scan and read the findings.
- Tick only the ones you are confident about. Nothing is selected for you.
- Choose “clean a draft copy”. ThemeMedic duplicates your theme and cleans the copy, leaving your live storefront untouched.
- Preview the draft, click through your key pages — home, product, cart, checkout entry.
- If it looks right, publish the draft yourself from your Shopify admin.
The backup
Before any change, including on a draft, a full backup of the theme is stored and offered as a downloadable archive. Restoring puts every file back exactly as it was, in one click.
Cleaning the live theme directly is offered, but there is rarely a reason to choose it. The draft path costs one extra click and removes the entire category of “my storefront broke on a Friday evening”.
What is never touched
- Anything you did not explicitly tick.
- Code belonging to apps that are still installed — those findings are shown as informational and cannot be selected by accident.
- Your theme settings and content, which live outside the files being edited.
